Serindia Enterprises

Founded in 1976 in London by the late Anthony Aris (1946-2015) and named after the fabled region between China and India, Serindia Publications has been in our collection since 2003. It has been expanded to include publications on contemporary art, photography, hospitality under the Serindia Contemporary imprint. For the Thai-language market, we have the Gallery Publishing imprint, which published translations of the popular fiction Crazy Rich Asians, as well as the American classic Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, whose novel was made by BBC/PBS in 1992 with upcoming sequel by Netflix in 2019.

SERINDIA GALLERY, opened in 2009 in Bangkok and now in its 10th anniversary, has been among the best known galleries in the region, representing Asian and international artists. It has curated groundbreaking shows on photography, paintings, and installations, pioneering and reviving the neighborhood that has become known now as the Charoen Krung Creative District. In 2018, it collaborated with the Blue Gallery in New York to create a multi-function space for art and performances, also available for hire.

Responding to the demand for the regional creative community for access to art books, our enterprises created HARDCOVER: THE ART BOOK SHOP, first opened in 2012 at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre. In 2014, it expanded to Central Embassy and in 2017 was asked to join Open House as an independent bookstore to create a co-living retail space that has won multiple awards, including Design for Asia Best and the Most Beautiful Bookstore by Asian Bookstore Forum, Chengdu.

Welcome to The Flavour Suspect! We are suspects of flavours of modern cuisine and their social media influence. The Flavour Suspect was created in 2020 for the casual enjoyment of food, food photos and tidbits on restaurants, café where we encounter. We will at times ask contributors to share their knowledge and photographs of various cuisine.

Another category of products that is also a feature in our bookstores is stationery. We bring about this unique concept of the writing traditions of the East and the West, combining them in interesting ways that break out of the norm, providing a new platform for interesting stationery products, from award-winning items to upscale designer’s stationery pieces.

HURT by Hardcover as a business, it is our vintage market platform. HURT handles used, second-hand, condition-challenged books that have been in one's possessions or shelf-worn. We run pop-up shops in events such as Made by Legacy and other book fairs in the vintage theme. Merchandise may include other vintage items.

Why “hurt”? “Hurt books” is a book business term that refers to damaged or condition-challenged books, often discounted, and they are not as valuable as content-specific out-of-print books, hard-to-find, or antiquarian books. We love the books we love, and when they are discarded, we don’t have to be broken-hearted. We offer them at lower prices. That’s why we have HURT by Hardcover, to fill in the ecosystem of book recycling. Broken-hearted or not, they will always find an audience, a new mate in consolation.

This groundbreaking project is a continuous development from the World Bank's LGBTQ+ economics report both in the region and from Washington DC. We had the opportunity to discuss this project with a developer partner whose location is suitable for such venture. We have ready contents and materials that will be truly unique and exciting in the region, with economics and academic ground works to make this part of our cultural enterprise. Stay tuned!  

Working with the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), whose Good Design Award has been the gold benchmark for designs in Asia for more than 60 years, Serindia Enterprises brought Good Design Store to Bangkok in 2014 at Central Embassy. For the first time, a shop dedicated to products with globally-recognized award is open in Bangkok. Good Design Store has been at the forefront of the business of design in Thailand, bringing talks and talents, to promote design commerce and education.

EDITIONS MARKETPLACE was created to answer to a more mass-market of design and gift products. Positioned within Thailand's Creative Economy Agency (formerly TCDC), the store showcases the latest Thai design products and outputs of the creative collaboration between Thai and international designers.

GALLERY PUBLISHING is an imprint of Serindia Publications devoted to the publication of Thai-language original works and translated works. We accept manuscripts, proposals, both in Thai and English, and translations from and to both languages.

GALLERY AGENCY answers to the call of the creative industry for representations where creative individuals and galleries coexist in special projects and commissioned works. Gallery Agency extends to literary representations for our publishing venture as well as artists and individual artworks.

Temporary locations (pop-ups, impromptu creative space) for the creative community require a different set of challenges for an immediate effect on traditional as well as social media. Serindia works with Fastech, a company that specializes in membrane structure, creating interesting temporary forms of structure that meet this demand — art fairs, fashion shows, events and retail space. This allows us to be in the forefront of this industry and a unique creative outlet for our projects. Structures created are reusable and for hire.

FLIP Auction House Thailand [Project currently under development] is a new marketplace for collectors of all types, from hobbyists to seasoned collectors. “Flip” is a playword — to quickly buy and sell for a profit  — and the art world is a playground for art lovers and investors alike. In the young art market like Thailand, we want to use the easiest word for non-English speakers to understand, as well as to convey the fun of the auction transaction. Flip will change the way the current market perceives about auction, and open new ways from buyers and sellers alike to transact.

THE GOLDEN PEACH is a company in our enterprises that deals with the food and restaurant industry. The Golden Peach is an exotic fruit along the Silk Road reputed to have come from Samarkand. The fruits would have traveled along the "Serindia" road, thus our name for this venture. We had tested the venture by operating Movenpick Ice Cream boutique in Thailand. Our Golden Peach team also performed consultancy work for the kitchen and operation of New York's renowned Clinton Street Baking Company when it first opened in Bangkok in 2017.

BUBBLES AND TRUFFLES represent the pinnacles of drinks and food ingredients — the sparkling bubbles of champagne and wines and the scent and rarity of truffles. We were inspired by the book we published TRUFFLES by Ken Hom and Pierre-Jean Pébeyre of the established French truffle Pébeyre since 1897. We created a transportable, physical Bubbles & Truffles bar that works in our events, gallery openings, and others. The concept and operation will be made to a permanent venture once we found a suitable location.

RONG JÉ [Project in development] is one of our dream Thai-Chinese project. Rong Jé (pronounced Rong Jay) is something unique to the Thai-Chinese community — meaning a vegetarian hall. A vegetarian hall is where Thai-Chinese Buddhist followers come to practice and pray. Rong Jé serves fantastic vegetarian food in grand public Chinese kitchen style. We have unique connections to these recipes and kitchens and are working with a partner and location to realize this restaurant concept.
